Curriculum Progression

LEVEL 0
(Kindergarten)

The curriculum begins with phonemic awareness and single letter sounds. It introduces short vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and basic consonants, progressing to reading simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words using short whimsically illustrated practice books with phrases like "cat can run" and "a red jet". Students also learn that certain letters (C, G, S, Y) can make more than one sound and are introduced to their first high-frequency "Superstar Words" (like a, the, is, to).

LEVEL 1
(1st Grade)

This level introduces long vowel sounds and the "Magic E" (CVCe) rule with words like bike, cake, and tube. Students learn vowel teams (e.g., ee, oo, ai, oa) and consonant digraphs/teams (e.g., sh, th, ch, wh, ng). Level 1 also teaches foundational grammar, explaining how words form complete sentences, the use of capital letters, and the purpose of punctuation marks like periods, commas, exclamation points, and quotation marks.

LEVEL 2
(2nd Grade)

The final level tackles advanced phonics, starting with two-letter consonant blends (L, R, and S blends like bl, cr, st) and three-letter "Super Blends" (spl, spr, str, scr). Lessons cover the "Bossy R" (ar, er, ir, or, ur), silent letters (l, b, t, k, w, h), and tricky teams that make multiple sounds (such as ea, ie, ou, and gh). Students also learn about prefixes and suffixes and graduate to reading short biographies about historical figures like Mary Anning, Louis Braille, and Bessie Coleman.

Teaching Methodology

The Readerland lesson plans guide parents and teachers to keep reading sessions short (5 to 10 minutes) and playful, avoiding a strict "school" atmosphere. The methodology emphasizes:

PURE SOUNDS:

Parents are instructed to teach crisp letter sounds without adding an "uh" at the end (e.g., saying "mmm" instead of "muh") so children can easily blend words.

DECODING & SIGHT WORDS:

The program balances sounding out words (decoding) with learning the 100 "Superstar Words"—high-frequency sight words that make up 50% of everything we read.
